New Study Examines Cervical Manipulation and Artery Dissection
A large 2026 study of nearly 863,000 matched patients provides important new evidence on cervical manipulation and cervical artery dissection (CeAD). Among patients seeking care for new neck pain or headache, researchers found no increased risk of CeAD following chiropractor-administered cervical manipulation compared with outpatient medical care involving an ibuprofen prescription.
The study also highlights an important clinical issue: neck pain and headache can themselves be early symptoms of an existing dissection, making careful evaluation and appropriate referral essential. We break down what the study found, what it did not prove, and what Kansas chiropractors should take from it.
ICD-10 2027 for Chiropractors
The 2027 ICD-10 update is relatively quiet for chiropractic practices, but there is one change you will want to make before October 1. Plantar fasciitis is moving to new laterality-specific codes, meaning practices using M72.2 in favorites, templates, or diagnosis picklists will need to update their systems.
Dr. Evan Gwilliam breaks down that change, a new coding option for difficulty walking and unsteadiness, and three everyday ICD-10 rules that may have an even bigger impact on clean claims and reimbursement.

Medicare, Medicare Advantage and Insurance Updates
KCA’s Medicare Committee met this week to discuss several issues that could affect your practice, including the latest Medicare legislation, potential CMS deactivation of providers who rarely submit claims, upcoming Medicare Advantage changes, and the delay of proposed HIPAA Security Rule requirements. The committee also discussed major Anthem/Blue Cross reimbursement cuts being implemented in other states and a ChiroTouch setting that may be contributing to BlueKC claim denials here in Kansas.
